Returning Stronger

After a lot of counseling, love, and support, I will be returning to Liberia in August.

When I returned to America in December, I had no idea what the future held. I had no permanent residence, no car, no phone number, and no winter clothes. I had two priorities - my own health and the wellbeing of those still under our care. In terms of my own health, my friends and family stepped up and supported me in ways I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand or appreciate. I am often moved to tears as my heart overflows with gratitude for what they have done for me during this season. They offered me love and helped me immediately dive into counseling.

After months of counseling sessions and time spent reflecting, processing, and unpacking the last several years of my life, both on my own and with trusted friends, I received two external sources of affirmation that helped guide me as I considered my next steps. The first came from the Standing Side by Side Board of Directors, who let me know that they supported my return to Liberia in August, pending completion of counseling. The second came from my counselor, who said he felt confident in the progress we had made, saw how I was implementing the tools he had given me as situations arose, and was comfortable terminating our sessions for the time being. I benefitted from these sessions in ways I never imagined, and I would strongly recommend counseling for everyone, regardless of your circumstances!

I know the road I am on will continue as difficulties still lie ahead, but I feel stronger and more confident now to face them, thanks to my friends and family and thanks to Jesus, who has been with me throughout this process.

I have officially booked a flight to return to Liberia early August and to come back in late December. At this point, I don’t know what lies on the other side of December. Maybe God has me in Liberia full time and maybe he wants me to continue taking extended trips. There are too many variables and too much uncertainty for me to say. I am praying I receive clarity while there. But I do know that he will continue to provide as he so faithfully has throughout this process. I have been so grateful for the supporters and sponsors who have continued to give during this tough time. The children are cared for, and I can’t wait to be back over there helping facilitate all God is doing in their lives.

I am working side jobs for the time being, so I do have a fair amount of free time. Feel free to reach out to me (coreykoon9@gmail.com) if you’d like to talk more or if you would like to meet up. I am also available for speaking, if you would like for me to come to your church, bible study, or any other gathering to share more about what God is doing in Liberia.
